Roof Leaking After Heavy Rain? What to Do Before the Roofer Gets There

A roof leak after a heavy Ozarks rain is stressful, and it usually happens at night or on a weekend. The good news: a few simple steps in the first hour can limit the damage, protect your insurance claim, and help your roofer find the problem faster.

Here’s what I tell homeowners in Branson, Springfield, Nixa, Ozark and Republic to do before the roofer gets there.

Step 1: Make It Safe First

  • Keep water away from electricity. If water is dripping near light fixtures, ceiling fans or outlets, turn off that circuit at the breaker.
  • Watch for a sagging ceiling. A bulging spot in drywall is holding water. Put a bucket under it and keep people and pets out from under it.
  • Stay off the roof. Wet shingles are slick, and most roof injuries happen to homeowners trying to find a leak in bad weather. Let a roofer go up when it’s safe.

Step 2: Catch the Water and Protect Your Things

  • Set out buckets, totes or trash cans, with a towel inside to cut down splashing.
  • Move furniture, electronics and rugs away from the drip.
  • Cover anything you can’t move with plastic sheeting or a tarp.
  • If it’s safe, check the attic with a flashlight. Water on the decking or insulation shows you roughly where it’s coming in.

Step 3: Document Everything for Insurance

If the leak came from storm damage, your photos may matter later. As a former insurance agent and claims adjuster, this is the step I see homeowners skip most often.

  • Take photos and video of the ceiling, walls, floors and anything damaged.
  • Write down the date and time the leak started and what the weather was doing.
  • Keep damaged items until your adjuster says otherwise.
  • Keep receipts for anything you buy to protect the home, like tarps or a dehumidifier.

Step 4: Call a Local Roofer

Call or text Bold Roofing at (417) 222-7535. Tell us where the water is showing up, when it started, and whether you’ve had recent hail or high wind. We’ll get someone out as quickly as we can to find the source. When weather allows, we can also put temporary protection in place until the repair is done.

Here’s how our emergency roof repair and tarping service works, from the first call to the permanent fix.

Why Roofs Leak After Heavy Rain

Heavy, wind-driven rain finds weak spots that a light shower never reaches. The most common sources we find:

  • Flashing around chimneys, skylights and where the roof meets a wall.
  • Plumbing vent boots that have cracked from sun exposure.
  • Valleys where two roof slopes meet and water concentrates.
  • Wind-lifted or missing shingles after a storm.
  • Clogged gutters that back water up under the roof edge. See our gutter replacement services.
  • Missing ice-and-water protection on an older roof.

Roof Leaking but the Shingles Look Fine?

This is one of the most common calls we get. Most leaks don’t start in the middle of a shingle. They start at a detail: flashing, a pipe boot, a valley, or the edge of the roof. Water can also travel along the decking and show up several feet from where it got in. That’s why a hands-on roof inspection beats guessing from the ground.

Will Insurance Cover a Roof Leak?

It depends on the cause. Homeowners policies generally cover sudden damage, like hail or wind, and the interior damage it causes. They generally don’t cover leaks from age, wear or poor maintenance. Your policy and your adjuster decide coverage, not your roofer. What we can do is inspect, document what we find with photos, and give you a clear written estimate.

Repair or Replace?

A single leak on a roof in good shape is usually a repair. Several leaks, widespread storm damage or an aging roof may make replacement the smarter money. Read Should I Repair or Replace My Roof? for how we decide, and roof financing options if a replacement isn’t in this month’s budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a roof leak an emergency?

An active leak near electrical fixtures, a sagging ceiling, or water pouring in is an emergency. A slow drip you can catch in a bucket is urgent but can usually wait a day for a proper repair.

Can I tarp my roof myself?

We don’t recommend climbing a wet or storm-damaged roof. If you do put a tarp up, do it only in dry, calm conditions, and photograph the damage before you cover it.

How fast can Bold Roofing come out?

Call or text (417) 222-7535. We work to get to active leaks as quickly as possible. After a big storm, demand spikes across the area, so call early.
